Library Resources for High School Students

General Questions

Where can I view films in the library?

There is a viewing room with stations to view films on the 4th floor. It is open whenever the library is open.

I can't find a book on the shelves - what do I do?

If you are searching for a book that shows available in the catalog, but is not on the shelf, check with the Main Circulation Desk to see if it is on a sorting shelf or a book truck in advance of being returned to the stacks. If the item is still missing, fill out a hold/trace form so that we can search for the missing item. If we cannot find the item after a week of searching, we should be able to obtain a copy through Interlibrary Loan, if necessary.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

What types of materials are available to borrow through ILL?

Circulating books, music scores, and scans of journal and newspaper articles are the resources most commonly requested through ILL. Other types of materials, such as LP records, VHS tapes, bound journals, dissertations, archival materials, special collections, and reference books/scores, are generally not available for loan. However, you can always ask. We will make every effort to find the materials you need.

Who may use the Library’s ILL services?

ILL services are available to all current UNCSA faculty, staff, and students. All others, including registered public patrons, are not eligible for ILL services.

How are ILL requests submitted?

Fill out an ILL request form to request an item that the UNCSA Library does not own. If you are requesting more than one item, please fill out a separate request for each item. Please provide as much information as possible. We will contact you if we need more information.

How much does ILL cost?

We always try first to borrow from libraries that do not charge for loans. However, some items may only be available from libraries that charge a lending fee. Lending fees can range from $5 to $25. On the request form, please specify the maximum amount you are willing to pay to borrow a particular item even if the amount is 0.

How long does ILL take?

Please allow at least five to ten business days for print materials to arrive. Requests for scans of articles are usually fulfilled within a day or two and will arrive in your email inbox. If you have a firm date by which you need to receive your request, please be sure to specify that on the request form and we will make every effort to accommodate you.

Where will I pick up my ILL request?

General books are held at the 1st Floor Service Desk, while music and media materials are held at the 4th Floor Service Desk. As soon as your requested item arrives, we will notify you by email and/or phone. ILL items that are not picked up within two weeks of your being notified will be returned to the lending library.

When and where do I return ILL materials?

The due date for the item will be indicated on the item. Loan periods vary among lending libraries and may be anywhere from one week to a month. Please return your ILL item to the same service desk where you picked it up. If you need an ILL item for longer than the given due date, please contact us to request a renewal. Please note that some libraries do not allow renewals.

How to Request Interlibrary Loans

Choose either of the options below to submit a request:

  • Fill out the ILL request form directly based on item type.
  • Check WorldCat for the item you need; in the item record, use the Request Item button to submit your ILL Request.

Consider making a purchase request

If you think that we should have the item in our permanent collection, please let us know by filling out our Purchase Request Form.

Remote Access

How do I access electronic library resources from off campus?

Due to licensing agreements, access to electronic resources is restricted to current students, staff and faculty. If you are off campus, you will be prompted to authenticate with your campus credentials before gaining access to these resources.

To access these materials from off-campus, you must use links from the library website or catalog, or links provided by an instructor (these links will contain an EZProxy reference in the URL).

Having issues?
Make sure you accessed the resource you are using through the library websites, and that you have authenticated through ezproxy. If you are receiving authentication errors, or have any other issues, please contact us.

How do I get movies to Screen or Stream Remotely?

If you need to stream films:

Please send a list of films to ereserves@uncsa.edu Please include the class title and instructor's last name.

We will attempt to license your choices and send you links to streams that you can share via Canvas or via email.

We will respond to you when we have a firm idea of what is available.

Turnaround is from 2 days to over a week (if we have to order DVDs). We endeavor to make it as fast as possible.

Additionally we aren’t sure when vendors, the post office or the school will close, which will affect what we can do.

Please send questions to Christia Thomason.
