New York Times Online - Set Up and Troubleshooting Guide

Having issues with your NYT account or need help setting it up? Try the steps here.

Re-activate your NYT account

The New York Times requires accounts associated with an educational institution to be re-activated every 4 years, in an effort to keep active users in line with the institution's current student, staff, and faculty population.

Student accounts will expire on December 31st of the graduation year selected during the initial activation and can only be re-activated if the user is still a current student with a current UNCSA-email address.

Faculty and Staff accounts will stop working exactly four years after they were initially set up. You may notice this when you attempt to read articles and encounter a paywall (you can also follow the steps below to check when your account will expire and set a reminder). You will not receive any official communication from The New York Times about the expiration and there is no way to pre-emptively re-activate an account ahead of an impending expiration.

If you suspect your account has expired, follow the steps under the Setting up your account section of this guide, as if you were creating a brand-new account. Once your account is re-activated, any history or data (saved articles, newsletter preferences, etc.) should carryover from your previous account.

Check when your account will expire

Open The New York Times homepage, and look in the upper right hand corner for "Account." Click the down arrow to open up your account details. Confirm that your UNCSA email address is listed, and that the subscription type is "News: Group Access":

Now that you've confirmed that you're signed into your account, open our sign-up link in the same browser:

This should open a page that recognizes your account as already activated, and will include the date your current activation expires (and allow you to set a calendar reminder if you use Google Calendar):

Note: this date and time will be different for each user. It is exactly 4 years from when you last activated your account.
