New York Times Online - Set Up and Troubleshooting Guide

Having issues with your NYT account or need help setting it up? Try the steps here.

Set up your free New York Times account

BEFORE STARTING: If you've read the New York Times previously or have any type of account history with the site, please visit the What if I have an existing account? section of this guide before starting the activation process.

You should be able to activate your access from anywhere (on and off campus), on any internet-enabled device.

To begin, click our sign up link to activate your digital pass! Please note, attempting to create an account from any other initial access point may create issues.

The link above should take you to a screen that reads "Welcome to The New York Times." From here, click "Create Account."

Enter your UNCSA email address, and click "Continue." DO NOT click "Continue with work or school single sign-on." UNCSA does NOT use single sign-on to authenticate our New York Times accounts.

If the next screen reads "Create your free account" enter the password you wish to associate with your account and click "Create account." If instead the screen reads "Log in to your account," you've already created an account associated with your UNCSA-email. Enter the password if you know it, or follow the prompts to reset your password and regain access.

Next, you should see a screen that confirms an email has been sent to your school email address:

email confirmation

Check your inbox for an email from NYTimes.com (nytdirect@nytimes.com) with the subject "Confirm Your Email Address," that will contain a link to continue the process. If you're not seeing this email, please check your spam folders. The link found in the body of the email should bring you to this screen:

school association

From here, select either Student or Faculty/Staff and your graduation year, if applicable, and select "Sign Up." Your account should now be set up:

Success! You should now be able to use your UNCSA email and the password you created to log in to your NYT account on any device, anywhere. For further details on the features included in our subscription, please visit the What's included in our access? section of this guide.

Please note, for faculty and staff this set-up/activation process will need to be repeated once every 4 years. Student accounts will be valid through December 31st of the indicated graduation year.

Video walkthrough

If you prefer a video format, follow this set-up walkthrough video made by The New York Times

Note: The video starts from a more generic link (accessnyt.com) that will require you to select your school from a list to start (we are listed as UNC School of the Arts - Winston Salem, NC). To skip this step, start from our activation link. From 00:36 onward, the processes are identical.
