Note that some materials, such as reference books, bound or single copy journals, magazines, and newspapers do not circulate - that is, may only be used in the library. All circulating materials are subject to recall if needed for the reserve desk or if requested by another borrower.

Borrowing Policies

All current UNCSA faculty, staff, and students are eligible to borrow library materials from Semans Library and must present their official school ID (the One Card) each time they do so; no other identification is accepted for checkout. Restrictions do apply (see Loan Periods at right). Emeritus Faculty members enjoy the same privileges as current faculty/staff members. UNCSA members may also borrow library materials from UNC Co-Op libraries and Triad area TALA libraries, per cooperative borrowing agreements among these libraries.

All items checked out to an individual ID card remain the responsibility of the person named on that card.  Library items should be returned by the due date, complete and in good condition without evidence of defacement, mutilation or water damage.  Any library item, except iPods from the Music Library and technology lending items, may be returned to the Main Circulation Desk during library hours or at any time by way of the outside book drop located just to the right of the library’s main entrance.

UNC Co-Op libraries

Patrons with a current ID from their UNC System school (view interactive map) who wish to register as Co-Op Borrowers should present their school ID and fill out a form at the Main Circulation Desk.   Co-Ops are eligible for 5 check-outs at a time and are not required to wait for a card (none is issued) once identity is verified. View the general agreement...

Triad area TALA libraries

The Triad Academic Library Association (TALA)

The Triad Academic Library Association (TALA), to which UNCSA’s Semans Library belongs, is a near aggregate of the academic libraries in our area formed to provide timely access to library materials at all member institutions. Students, faculty and staff, whose institutions belong to TALA, may borrow materials in person from all other association institutions through registration with appropriate identification. Each library has determined its own rules and privileges, but a current photo ID is a minimum requirement of all the participating libraries.

For UNCSA borrowers, to save you time and trouble, check the TALA Lending Privileges & Library Addresses prior to your visit to determine the limitations and requirements in place at the various TALA libraries. For instance, Semans requires members coming here to present valid school identification and a picture ID (ours is one and the same), as well as evidence of current enrollment or employment at the member school (for us, accessing an email account is the quickest route). Go to the Access Services/Circulation Desk area of whatever library you choose and be prepared to present all required information in order to register; you may be asked to access your UNCSA library record to prove you are in good standing. If so, you will need to know your 8 digit school ID number. All borrowed items must be returned to the lending library by you, on time and in good condition. You are responsible for any fines or charges meted out to you by TALA libraries.

Local residents who want to register at the Semans Library as a Public Patron must report to the One Card Office. ID cards are only available Monday thru Friday from 9am to 5pm. The One Card Office will require a picture ID and a one time $15 card fee. Once registered, the Public Patron may return to the Semans Library to register their One Card.  Public Patrons are allowed to checkout 5 books at a time with a 4 week loan period.

Note: the Alumni Office no longer covers the registration fee for UNCSA alumnae/i.  Alumnae/i will have to register as a Public Patron.

Patrons from other institutions, Triad Area Libraries (TALA) or UNC System (Co-Op) libraries, can present their school ID and register to borrow form Semans Library.

TALA library patrons wishing to borrow from Semans Library must present a valid school and picture ID, as well as proof of current registration or employment at your TALA school. We allow members to borrow up to 5 items for 28 days, although there is no renewal. You do have access to our moving image collection (DVD and VHS), but it is for building use only in our Viewing Room. Our Reserve collection is not accessible. All items should be returned to our library by the due date. Items that are billed will include a $10 non-refundable billing charge. Registration must be updated every semester.

NOTE: UNC System borrowers in TALA must use CO-OP Borrowing (above) or Interlibrary Loan at their home library to borrow from UNCSA, not TALA.

Items that have restrictions on renewals

Videos/DVDs may not be renewed except by faculty/ staff.

Holds

If an item that you need is checked out, you may place a hold on that particular copy or on a copy of that title returned soonest by making the request at the Main Circulation Desk. Once the item is returned, an email will be sent to you and the item will be held for one week at the Main Circulation Desk. If you do not pick it up, the item will be re-shelved.

Recalls

A recall is a procedure initiated by the library when one patron needs access to material checked out to another patron. Normal check-out periods are 4 and 8 weeks for students and faculty/staff respectively. However a recall can be issued after a minimum of 2 weeks, and the patron then has 1 week to get the item back to the Circulation Desk. The exception to this rule is if a faculty member needs the material for Reserve. In that case, the material must be returned without delay. In either case, if the item is not returned as required by Recall policy, the patron record can be frozen until the item is returned.

To request a Hold or a Recall, please visit the Main Circulation Desk.
